Mission Statement
=========================================
Our vision for this large scale event is to create an engaging atmosphere where UC Davis and Davis communities can unite. Together, they will learn about and explore a common goal of sustainability. By developing a proactive and inspirational event focused towards promoting sustainable efforts, we hope to encourage the entire neighborhood to work together. When we invite the entire community to this event we hope to facilitate group and individual cooperation with one another in an effort to generate bonds and relationships that surpass age, education level, and personal perspectives. We will do this by dedicating spaces where people can converse and share experiences, like at the Children's Recycled Craft area. Since we are purposefully choosing our musical selection to be relaxing and not overpowering, conversations will be natural. The opportunity for City and campus groups to table will also educate our guest on sustainability and community empowerment. The bonds created during the event will strengthen community as a whole and increase awareness about sustainable practices.

UC Walks, a systemwide fitness event, May 19

When it comes to walking for health and fitness, UC Davis walks the walk — just ask the 1,500 or so members of the Aggies On the Move walking program.
So, no doubt a lot of the Aggies On the Move — and we hope everyone else, too — will be interested in a UC-wide event May 19: UC Walks.

Coinciding with National Employee Health and Fitness Day, UC Walks is the first systemwide health and wellness event targeted specifically at faculty and staff.
You can take your walk whenever you want, of course, but the UC Walks organizers on the Davis campus also have arranged for two gathering places where you can meet up with people to walk with, and even get a free T-shirt (while supplies last; UC Davis identification required).
East Quad Farmers Market (and, while you are there, why not pick up some fruits and vegetables?)
Activities and Recreation Center (meet in front)
Aggies On the Move and other volunteers will be at both sites from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to organizers, who added that a few walk leaders also will be stationed at each site.
If you plan to go for a walk, organizers said, be sure to bring a water bottle (reusable is always better!).
The T-shirts, provided by two of the UC system’s benefits providers, StayWell and Kaiser Permanente, are in medium, large and extra large sizes.
Oh, and one more thing: Davis campus organizers are hoping some of you UC Walks participants will arrange to have someone take a picture of you, by yourself or with your group.
Organizers said they are often in need of photos for presentations and websites. Send your photos to wellness@shs.ucdavis.edu or post them in your own workplaces as a reminder to get out and celebrate wellness!

MASTER BIKE KEY FOUND

There was a Master bike lock key found in the laundry room. The key is in the office for anyone who may think it belongs to them.

New Restaurant Alert: Tacos and Beer

Location: 715 2nd Street

Hours: Sun-Tue 11am-11pm
           Wed-Sat 11am-2:30am

Replacing Togo's, who makes the best sandwich out of all the popular, mainstream sub shops, comes Tacos and Beer. The menu includes all the items you would expect: tacos, burritos, quesadillas, taco salads, etc. with a choice of chicken, carne asada, barbacoa (shredded beef), and carnitas. There is a full chips and salsa bar and they have a decent size bar with a average selection of beers available. Prices are a little on the high side with tacos being about $2.35 and burritos around the $7.35 mark, but their burritos are huge. Tacos and Beer is a place to check out and could potentially be a popular Davis spot in the future. The staff is cool and down to Earth, they make their own tortillas and they serve tacos and beer, what else do you need?

UCA Community Tip of the Week: Garbage Disposal Care

Garbage Disposal Care

  1. Insert garbage loosely. If you pack in too much at once, you can jam the disposal.

  1. Use a strong flow of cold water & keep the garbage disposer running at least 30 seconds after noise of grinding has stopped to flush all food particles through the drain line.

  1. Always use cold water when operating the disposer to solidify fatty & greasy waste so they will be chopped up & flushed down the drain.

  1. It's safe to run hot water from the sink through the garbage disposer. However, use cold water when you are operating the disposer.

  1. If you wash dishes in a sink w/ a disposer, make sure all small objects are removed from the sudsy water before you drain the sink.

  1. If you have a continuous-feed disposer, move silverware & other small items away from the edge of the sink counter to avoid accidentally knocking them in while the garbage disposer is running.

  1. Do put small bones through; they help to scour the sides of the grinding chamber.

  1. Follow directions in the garbage disposer manual as to what should not be put through the disposer. Do not grind large bones or fibrous materials as corn husks unless the manual says it's ok. Only put a small amount of fibrous foods (celery, chard, asparagus ends, etc.) at a time through the garbage disposer w/ full water flow. If the drain line is long & quite horizontal, fibrous foods or too much garbage at one time can clog the line.

  1. Do not put uncooked fat off meat into the garbage disposer as it may clog. Don't pour liquid fats down line; solidify in empty tin can in refrigerator & dispose in the trash instead.

  1. Run the disposer each time you put food waste in it. This is particularly advisable in the less expensive models which are more subject to corrosion from the acids formed by food waste left for a long time.

  1. W/ a continuous-feed model, use the cover as directed to protect yourself when grinding bones or fruit pits--small particles could possible be ejected by the force of the disposer action. Avoid leaning over the disposer if you are feeding waste into it while it is running.

MacGruber
===========
Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In the 10 years since his fiancee was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that's been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, MacGruber figures he's the only one tough enough for the job. Assembling an elite team of experts — Lt. Dixon Piper and Vicki St. Elmo — MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.
