UCA Staff Contacts

Dear UCA Resident,

As we are already three weeks into the new school year, I would like to make sure all of our residents have the appropriate contacts for staff members here at UCA. For all maintenance issues, UCA maintenance supervisor / manager Peter Krzinsky will be notified. Also starting this week there will be maintenance requests forms in the clear box located on the front of the UCA office. Tenants will be able to fill out the form and put it into the mail slot right next to the UCA office door and the UCA maintenance staff will assess and resolve any maintenance issues ASAP.
After 7PM, UCA residents will contact Jonathan Goold, UCA night / weekend manager, for any none urgent issues i.e. locked out of apartment, package inquiries, parking issues, etc.
For all other issues UCA residents can contact Levon Gibson, UCA manager. Please do not contact me for any maintenance issues unless it is an emergency. Contacts are posted on the front UCA office window.

5 College Apartment Cleaning Tips

Keeping up with chores in a college apartment can seem impossible, when you’re living a busy life. The problem is compounded when you have a roommate, who has his or her own schedule, and has problems with cleaning as much as you do. Having different personalities and preferences for cleanliness can soon make sharing an apartment miserable. Follow these tips to help you fit cleaning into your schedule, and to clean thoroughly enough to keep yourself or your roommate happy.
1 - Pick a Day for Deep Cleaning
You won’t be able to do a thorough cleaning of your college apartment every day. It’s not a wise use of your time. A better approach is to set aside one day to do the “big stuff,” such as mopping, washing counters and dusting. Saturday is a popular choice for other apartment renters, but that might be the day when you have to work, or attend events on campus. A weekday may be a better option, and if you live with a roommate, try to find a day when you both can clean together.
2 - Spot Clean Throughout the Week
A kitchen timer or a stopwatch is a great investment to make for cleaning purposes. Buy one and use for spot cleaning the apartment. Commit to 10 minutes of cleaning per room at least once a day. Don’t go over your time limit in one room, because you may not have time to go the next room, or you’ll zap all of your energy by the time you get to another room. Set the timer, and clean what you can. Begin by picking things up off the floor and putting them away, and then move on to tidying up tables, chairs, couches and beds. You may need to dedicate 10 minutes just to organize paperwork and the mail. You can divide the responsibility of cleaning room in the college apartment with a roommate.
3 - Use Disposable Products During Exams
If you’re hand-washing dishes, by choice or because you don’t have a dishwasher, then you should consider using disposable products during midterm exam week and finals. You won’t have time to clean your apartment as much as you would during other periods, and the cleanliness of a college apartment can degrade during those busy times. Rather than have dishes pile up, which can attract flies and other pests, buy paper plates, bowls, cups and plastic utensils, just to see you through those extremely busy weeks. When things return back to normal, you can store any remaining items for the next busy period.
4 - Wash Once a Week
Doing small piles of laundry every day is not economical and it’s the worse way to approach this cleaning chore. There’s much wisdom in what your great grandparents most likely did, which was to set aside one day for washing. You should too. The wash will be a full load, which saves electricity costs, and your time.
5 - Make Your Own Cleaning Solutions
Commercial household cleaners can cost too much money, and the chemicals contained in them may have a negative impact on your health. You’ll be surprised at what you can do with vinegar, baking soda, borax and washing soda. For example, you can make your own homemade window cleaning solution using vinegar and water only. There are many homemade recipes that you can find on the Internet that will produce better and healthier cleaning results.
Having a clean college apartment helps to reduce stress, which any student can benefit from. Use these tips to keep your living space fresh and clean.

Dear UCA Residents,
With the new school year almost already here you will start to see some new faces around the UCA community. The UCA staff would like to welcome all the new tenants and let's make sure we introduce ourselves to one another in order to create a friendly and cooperative community.
UCA is undergoing a lot of changes, the pool is in the process of being updated in order to be within compliance of the new  AB 1020 Federal law, and we are continuing to renovate units one by one. My maintenance staff is working diligently to make sure these renovations are completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Please excuse the mess and sounds of tile cutters, hammers, and drills that may be your 10 am wake up call. We very much appreciate your cooperation and be assured that the current UCA staff is dedicated to making UCA one of the best apartment communities in Davis.
Keep an eye out for notices concerning the UCA Fall Welcome BBQ, all residents are welcome , as well as family and friends.

Get More of Your Deposit Back!

For those of you who are moving out soon, make sure you get the most of your security deposit back as possible.  Here are some tips for areas most people miss:

1) Check and clean out all drawers and cabinets- you'll get charged for removal of any items left behind.

2) Clean out your oven -this is the most widely forgotten area that people miss and get charged for.

3) Sweep your patio and mop your balcony.

4) Fill in any holes you've created with hanging pictures, etc.  This just takes a few minutes and a little white spackle from the hardware store.

5) Look under your range hood- is it greasy?

6) Carpet stains- it's not enough to just vacuum.

7) Check for dirt/dust on window sills, blinds, closet shelves, and pantry shelves.

8) Did you empty your refrigerator and freezer?  How about the dishwasher? If not, you'll probably need to scrub the insides clean too.

9) Marks on walls and doors- something most people don't notice about their place, but new tenants will- so make sure to clean these.  A "magic eraser" is great for these kinds of jobs.

10) Clean behind the comode in the bathroom, as well as all calcium build-up on fixtures and underneath the sink.

Lastly:
Report any problems, pests, damages, etc. early so the management team can help you get your place in good condition before you leave.  You can get charged for neglecting problems in your apartment and not reporting them in a timely manner to prevent further damage, such as leaks, pest problems, etc.  Reporting early takes care of a lot that you won't need to answer for after you leave!

UC Walks, a systemwide fitness event, May 19

When it comes to walking for health and fitness, UC Davis walks the walk — just ask the 1,500 or so members of the Aggies On the Move walking program.
So, no doubt a lot of the Aggies On the Move — and we hope everyone else, too — will be interested in a UC-wide event May 19: UC Walks.

Coinciding with National Employee Health and Fitness Day, UC Walks is the first systemwide health and wellness event targeted specifically at faculty and staff.
You can take your walk whenever you want, of course, but the UC Walks organizers on the Davis campus also have arranged for two gathering places where you can meet up with people to walk with, and even get a free T-shirt (while supplies last; UC Davis identification required).
East Quad Farmers Market (and, while you are there, why not pick up some fruits and vegetables?)
Activities and Recreation Center (meet in front)
Aggies On the Move and other volunteers will be at both sites from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to organizers, who added that a few walk leaders also will be stationed at each site.
If you plan to go for a walk, organizers said, be sure to bring a water bottle (reusable is always better!).
The T-shirts, provided by two of the UC system’s benefits providers, StayWell and Kaiser Permanente, are in medium, large and extra large sizes.
Oh, and one more thing: Davis campus organizers are hoping some of you UC Walks participants will arrange to have someone take a picture of you, by yourself or with your group.
Organizers said they are often in need of photos for presentations and websites. Send your photos to wellness@shs.ucdavis.edu or post them in your own workplaces as a reminder to get out and celebrate wellness!

MASTER BIKE KEY FOUND

There was a Master bike lock key found in the laundry room. The key is in the office for anyone who may think it belongs to them.

New Restaurant Alert: Tacos and Beer

Location: 715 2nd Street

Hours: Sun-Tue 11am-11pm
           Wed-Sat 11am-2:30am

Replacing Togo's, who makes the best sandwich out of all the popular, mainstream sub shops, comes Tacos and Beer. The menu includes all the items you would expect: tacos, burritos, quesadillas, taco salads, etc. with a choice of chicken, carne asada, barbacoa (shredded beef), and carnitas. There is a full chips and salsa bar and they have a decent size bar with a average selection of beers available. Prices are a little on the high side with tacos being about $2.35 and burritos around the $7.35 mark, but their burritos are huge. Tacos and Beer is a place to check out and could potentially be a popular Davis spot in the future. The staff is cool and down to Earth, they make their own tortillas and they serve tacos and beer, what else do you need?

UCA Community Tip of the Week: Garbage Disposal Care

Garbage Disposal Care

  1. Insert garbage loosely. If you pack in too much at once, you can jam the disposal.

  1. Use a strong flow of cold water & keep the garbage disposer running at least 30 seconds after noise of grinding has stopped to flush all food particles through the drain line.

  1. Always use cold water when operating the disposer to solidify fatty & greasy waste so they will be chopped up & flushed down the drain.

  1. It's safe to run hot water from the sink through the garbage disposer. However, use cold water when you are operating the disposer.

  1. If you wash dishes in a sink w/ a disposer, make sure all small objects are removed from the sudsy water before you drain the sink.

  1. If you have a continuous-feed disposer, move silverware & other small items away from the edge of the sink counter to avoid accidentally knocking them in while the garbage disposer is running.

  1. Do put small bones through; they help to scour the sides of the grinding chamber.

  1. Follow directions in the garbage disposer manual as to what should not be put through the disposer. Do not grind large bones or fibrous materials as corn husks unless the manual says it's ok. Only put a small amount of fibrous foods (celery, chard, asparagus ends, etc.) at a time through the garbage disposer w/ full water flow. If the drain line is long & quite horizontal, fibrous foods or too much garbage at one time can clog the line.

  1. Do not put uncooked fat off meat into the garbage disposer as it may clog. Don't pour liquid fats down line; solidify in empty tin can in refrigerator & dispose in the trash instead.

  1. Run the disposer each time you put food waste in it. This is particularly advisable in the less expensive models which are more subject to corrosion from the acids formed by food waste left for a long time.

  1. W/ a continuous-feed model, use the cover as directed to protect yourself when grinding bones or fruit pits--small particles could possible be ejected by the force of the disposer action. Avoid leaning over the disposer if you are feeding waste into it while it is running.

Maus Haus w/ AB & The Sea

When: April 20, 2010 @ 7:00 pm

Location: TCS Building/Art Annex (UC Davis)

Web:

www.myspace.com/maushausmusic

www.myspace.com/abthesea

ASUCD Entertainment Council presents:

Maus Haus w/ AB & The Sea @ the Technocultural Studies (TCS) building on Tuesday, April 20, 2010!

Like any good band making original music, San Francisco's Maus Haus doesn't fit squarely into any particular genre. Their unique blend of 60s psychadelia, analog electronics, boisterous horns, and echoey vocals channels groups like Kraftwerk and Death Cab for Cutie—without really sounding like any one of those bands. Utilizing a clusterfuck of instruments, from Korgs and theremin-emulators to trombones and Omnichords, Maus Haus creates a hypnotizing wave of sound that, when experienced live, permeates every bone in your body.

When friends Koley O'Brien and Joseph Spargur left the frigid plains of Wisconsin for San Francisco, their beach blanket surf rock fantasies must have kicked into high gear. Now as A B & the Sea, the current five-piece is cranking out a fun and carefree indie pop that would make Paul Simon do a double take. With an energetic lo-fi sheen and impossible to resist hooks, their incredibly catchy music is already catching on.
